Then they told me who else was in the line-up and I very nearly fainted. And by now, I really wanted to get the story in to the anthology.įinally, on the Friday before the 4th of July weekend, they said it was good to go and I was thrilled. They didn’t mince words and each of their suggestions was sound. Well, they went through it and made me work my butt off and I loved every single minute of it. I jumped at the chance, since I’m always trying to improve my game. Now, this was the first time (despite having published novels through a major house) that an editor(s) wanted to work with me to make my story better. They wrote back a little later and told me they liked it but that it needed work. I fired it off to them and then went back to my other business. The story came out well and I was pleased. Well, as these things happen, I had an idea one day and sat down to write it. I was busy working on another Lawson book and wasn’t sure I would have anything to send along. I’d done a reading/signing with Tom and Elizabeth Monteleone and they asked if I had submitted anything for Borderlands 5 (the limited edition title) and at the time I hadn’t. MERZ: The experience of writing “Prisoner 392” was one of the best I’ve had to date in my publishing career. What was the experience like discovering your story had been accepted? And what was it like to see your name appearing alongside Stephen King?
